Psychoacoustic is fusion of psychology and acoustics science. Then it means that psychoacoustic is science exploring affect of sound (acoustics signal) to human psychology.
Sound can gives impact to human psychology depend on perception of that human. Perception is something which is influenced by interpretation mechanism on human brain. This is very difficult to be calculated and analyzed. This perception depends on biologic condition of human brain and ear.
Acoustic signal will influence the human behavior controlled by brain. For example, someone hear music then immediately a mini bomb is being blasted in near of him but that people doesn’t give any response. This effect is called masking effect. This effect is overlapping process of one incident to other incident managed by brain. In this condition, human brain produce brain wave concentrating that people to their music heard.
Other than that, the main effect on psychoacoustics science is hear perception depending on wave frequency. That is the main of psychoacoustics effect because the human ear can differentiate sound frequency before send it to brain. In our daily life, for example, a police serine has high frequency sound. This frequency is selected in order to break the human concentration. In contrast, in the low frequency, human can easily concentrate with what they do.
Instead get the frequency from the outside, human brain also produces the wave in some frequency itself. This wave frequency is correlated with the activity doing by its human. This wave frequency is in range within 0 to 100 Hz which can be separated to some kind.
Brainwave Synchronization
As we know, human brain produces some wave at some time. Our brain consists of billion of neurons connected each others. The combination of those neurons produces electrical activity which can be detected using medical equipment such as EEG. That electrical activity can be called brain wave pattern.
The pattern of brain wave correlates with human activity in same time. For example, the human brain wave when people is sleeping and walking is different. This pattern is also influenced by the human sense condition.
In the brainwave synchronization phenomenon, the sound heard by human will be separated by Bassiliar Membrane depend on its frequency level. The frequency sent to brain is the centre frequency. Brain will give the response with produce the wave with same frequency level.
Electroencephalography is the method to explore neurophysiology of brain elctrical activity by put the elctrode in the head skin. The result of this method is called electroencephalogram (EEG). This result rpresents the brain wave.
Four kinds of brain wave producing human brain based on EEG result:
- Alfa: Frequency range within 8,5-12 Hz. Thos wave is produced when we are relax.
- Beta: Frequency is more than 12 Hz. This wave is produced when we are bussy. This wave correlates with the concentration.
- Delta: Frequency is up to 4 Hz. Produced when we are sleeping.
- Teta: Frequency range within 4,5-8 Hz. This wave is prodeced when the human in twilight state. This wave kind correlates with intuition and creativity.
The exploration of this phenomenon (psychoacoustics and brainwave synchronization) gives many advantages to human especially to make brain produce the kind of wave they want. For example, if we want to make our brain to concentrate, we just hear the sound with exact frequency in right and left ear which can stimulate our brain to produce the beta wave.
Moreover, I and my team also has proposed that concept implemented to class for improving the student concentration in learning process. This concept is presented in Scientific Paper Competition in Education category held in Sepuluh Nopember Institutes of Technology (ITS) Surabaya, Indonesia at 2007 titled Implementation of Psychoacoustics-Brainwave Synchronization Effect for Improving Student Concentration in Learning Process.
